What we'll talk about

In the super-diverse world in which our children are growing up, multilingualism is both an asset and a challenge. As such, it is also a hot topic of conversation in educational and political fields, where accurate as well as inaccurate and/or misleading information circulates.

In this lecture we will discuss the following questions about multilingualism: How does language development occur in (young) children? How do they learn a language? And what happens when children learn multiple languages? Are home languages an obstacle to learning Dutch or can the home language be a steppingstone? And as a parent or educator, how can you maximize language stimulation?

During the lecture we will create a framework for language acquisition and a positive approach to multilingualism, based on recent research. We will also establish a connection to a few concrete experiences and examples, so that you as a parent or educator can get inspiration to positively deal with multilingual educational situations.
